Govern Your Tongue

Small bits change big directions: use your mouth with governance, for life and not for fire.

Read

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire; the very world of iniquity, the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

Today’s message

God loves to start from where no one expects: a discreet bit controls a horse, a minimal rudder turns a ship. James looked at our mouth and said the same. The tongue is too small to be ignored and too powerful to be left unchecked. I have seen a tank fall and become a joke at home; I have also seen a right phrase save a couple. Words have power. It is not magic, it is influence. You and I need to take responsibility for every syllable that comes out of our mouths.

James calls this maturity. We measure growth by the distance between what we think and what we choose to say. Proverbs says: death and life are in the power of the tongue. Jesus explains: the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. The tongue does not manufacture what does not exist in the heart; it reveals. Therefore, before speaking, I stop. I ask my heart: what are my words producing in me and around me?

Beware of these ways to misuse the tongue

  1. Speaking without thinking — heat of emotion, impulse, posting without reflecting and then regretting.
  2. Lying, exaggerating, or distorting — an appearance that the truth cannot sustain, like Ananias and Sapphira.
  3. Speaking driven by anger — attacking identity, exposing secrets, hurting those I love at home.
  4. Speaking of myself without hope — permanent sentences that bind my future and my identity.
The tongue is too small to be ignored and too powerful to be left ungoverned.

Do not accept labels about your story as final truths. I have heard heavy sentences and responded with faith, treatment, and prayer; I have seen God reverse. Words do not create reality by trick, but they create atmosphere, direction, and courage. On social media, at home, and at work, choose to be a source of fresh water. Not everything we think we can say. Not every feeling deserves a microphone.

three ways to use our mouth correctly

  1. Convey truth and grace — wait, reflect, forgive, restore, and speak healing.
  2. Nurture faith, hope, and courage — declare confidence in the promise, like David before Goliath.
  3. Pray, bless, and worship — prophesy blessing over children, leaders, and family.

I want to give you five simple filters before speaking: is it true? is it necessary? will it build up? is it the right moment? am I speaking in the right way? Today, ask God for forgiveness for what you have hurt, and forgive those you have hurt. Release forgiveness to those who have spoken against you. Use your mouth to bless your home. Every contrary word is canceled in the authority of the name of Jesus.
