Carry Only What is Necessary: Courage, Faith, and Hope

In life's journey, discard dead weight and carry courage, faith, and hope to face giants.

Read

Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Today’s message

For 7 years, due to the music ministry, I lived in airports and compact suitcases. I learned, the hard way, to choose the essentials. While I rehearsed lists of "what ifs?", God was pruning weights from my soul's bag. Carry only what is necessary — the phrase echoed when I realized how we try to pack galoshes for the desert and coats for the beach. In life with God, the suitcase that travels far is the one that fits in the overhead compartment of purpose. Enough of dead weight; enough of things that don't make sense occupying the space that grace wants to use.

In 1 Samuel 17, Goliath defies Israel for 40 days in the Valley of Elah. Saul tries to lend David his war kit, but the armor hinders his steps. David returns what doesn't fit, goes down to the brook, chooses five stones, puts them in his pouch, takes the staff and the sling — and goes. It's little in human eyes, but enough in God's hands. The strategy wasn't volume, it was obedience. The boy didn't take everything; he took what was necessary. And that made room for the name of the Lord to be the protagonist of the battle.

Three essential elements for life's luggage

  1. Courage: necessary to face the fear of failure and the unknown.
  2. Faith: a firm foundation that points to God, not to us.
  3. Hope: keeps a living and positive expectation about the future.
Our hope, it resurrected and its name is Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is persistence beyond fear. It faces the fear of failure, the anxiety for tomorrow, and the control mania that stifles steps of faith. God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Courage is saying "I will go," even with a churning stomach, because the call weighs more than the tremors. Today, release the control that holds you at the dock and walk lightly: hand over your worries to the Lord and take the first step you have been postponing.

Faith is a foundation, not an impulse. It is not positivism or denial of the problem; faith in God does not deny reality — it makes us believe despite it. I think of the castaway clinging to a log in the river: biblical faith is holding onto the faithful God with both hands. David did not trust in the sling or his own aim; he declared he would go in the name of the Lord of Armies. When reality shouts louder, don't change the name of the giant — change who governs your story.

Hope looks ahead. While faith brings the future into the present, hope sustains the heart until then. For in hope we were saved; hoping for what is seen is no longer hope (Romans 8:24). Just over 60 days ago, we buried two beloved leaders, and my ground vanished. What held me? Hope: our hope, it resurrected and has a name — Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Bring to mind what gives you hope and repeat with David: my hope is in God. It's time to make room for it in your luggage.

  • Smooth stones from brooks were preferred for the sling, as they offered better stability and accuracy when thrown.
