Do not count on people; count on God

Stop measuring your life by the approval of others; fix your eyes on the cross and trust in the Lord.

Then David said to Gad, I am in great distress; let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercies are great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.

Today’s message

I opened to 2 Samuel 24 and saw David asking to count the army. Joab comes back with the number and suddenly, David realizes: I have sinned. I was thinking: is counting people a sin? For David who defeated Goliath because he believed in the Lord, yes. The problem was not arithmetic; it was the shift of trust. When we start measuring life by numbers and applause, the heart goes astray. God calls us back: do not count on people; count on me. Look to the cross. That is where our strength comes from.

The scene is strong: David realizes the mistake and turns back to God. This confronts me too. How many times have I wanted the security that the eyes see? A full spreadsheet, a crowd saying 'go'. But faith is not a popularity contest; it is surrender to Jesus. When the gospel finds us, it does not require us to fix everything first. It calls us: come as you are. He breaks the vessel, remakes it, and the glory is His. I do not need everyone's yes; I need the Lord sustaining my steps.

What I learn from David today

  1. Trusting in numbers and approval is a stumbling block; our source is the Lord.
  2. When the heart comes to itself, it confesses and turns back to God.
  3. Looking to the cross repositions the soul and cleanses the motives.
  4. Gratitude heals fear and rekindles the faith that has already proven God's care.
Do not count on the approval of people; count on God and look to the cross.

I invite you to a simple and profound gesture. Place your hand on your heart and remember God's interventions in your story. Remember the day you jumped for joy, the knee on the ground, the deliverance that had no explanation. Everything we have came from Him. Let gratitude flow from your mouth. Gratitude heals, dislodging fear. If today the answer has not come, He has already answered before. And if He answered before, He remains the same. Yesterday, today, and forever.

How to respond now

  1. Stop seeking the approval of people and fix your eyes on the cross.
  2. Place your hand on your heart and name three interventions of God in your life.
  3. Let gratitude flow: thank out loud for what He has already done.
  4. Surrender to Jesus as you are and allow Him to remake you.

I keep singing this with my life: it is for Him, to Him. It is not about cars, horses, or houses; the great miracle is the transformed heart. If today you are downcast, fall into the hands of the Lord, not into the hands of men. Many are His mercies. He will come. While we wait, we obey: eyes on the cross, steps in gratitude, heart surrendered. Do not count on people; count on God.
