The preacher opened the theme with unlikely scenes: a basket becoming refuge in the river, a virgin pregnant, Elizabeth barren giving prophetic voice, the Messiah in a manger. It’s not a greeting card script; it’s God’s way. We want signs aligned with our desires; He calls us to follow a direction. That’s where faith stops being religious guessing and becomes a real step. Amid spreadsheets and maps, God insists: walk. The moon in the sky is not confirmation; His word and character are. You don’t need to understand everything to trust.
Hebrews points to Abraham going out without Waze or a sign. He obeys and walks. The preacher tied this to the promise: God goes ahead, leveling and breaking what seems closed (Isaiah 45:2). Presence above the map. When we ask for a printed route, God responds as He did to Moses: I am with you. If the Author already knows the end from the beginning, today’s step is not in the dark; it’s in the light of His character. Faith does not deny the doubt of the path but chooses who will lead each curve.
The Two Levels of Faith
- Believing that God exists: faith that recognizes the real but still trembles in the storm.
- Trusting in God’s character: faith that rests because it knows who promised.

The preacher illustrated this with the image of Jesus sleeping while the boat rocks. Those who know the Father’s character read the scene by the end that God has already spoken, not by the waves. It’s the difference between those who collect signs and those who walk by direction. The anxious question is Who am I? God’s answer remains I am with you. If there’s no cross in the boat, this is not where the story ends. His presence sustains in the evil day, governs steps, and corrects the route as we walk.
And when everything seems contrary? Joseph heard the promise and faced a pit, sale, and prison before the palace. The preacher hammered: the process is already part of the promise. Opposition does not cancel the promise. What they planned for evil, God turned into good (Genesis 50:20). Like in the construction site you execute without knowing the house will be yours, every detail of obedience matters. God treats things that are not as if they were; therefore, do not abort the work because the dust has risen. Persevering is cooperating with the Potter’s hand.
Direct application: prioritize presence over the map. Remember the supernatural you’ve seen when the next crossing threatens to intimidate. Rename deserts as forge, not abandonment. And make the declaration the preacher led us to make: Even without understanding, I trust in You. As you walk, God explains. As you obey, He aligns doors, tables, and people. Opposition only reveals how valuable the promise is; the process only sharpens who you are becoming in God.
