Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, Sit here while I go and pray over there.

Today’s message
We start by talking about governance because if I don't take charge of my life, someone else will take charge for me. What feeling would you turn off for 24 hours if you could? The anger from a situation, the worry that won't let you go, the longing that tightens? The problem is not feeling. The danger is when the feeling ascends to the throne and dictates the course. We live in a time when feelings have become the authority of decision. That's not how it should be. Choices govern, not impulses. Above all that you must guard, guard your heart. Let's learn from Jesus how to govern what we feel.
In Gethsemane, Jesus did not deny what He was feeling. He said, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. He recognized, named, called for support, and prayed. He brought His pain to the Father: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. This is the way: truth about what I feel, presence of trustworthy people by my side, and surrender of will before God. It is not coldness; it is holy governance.
He calls three friends
- Peter
- James
- John
If you do not govern your feelings, they will govern your destiny.
Jesus shows us that feelings need a safe valve. A pressure cooker without a release explodes. Every explosive behavior is an unresolved feeling. So, no numbing with distraction that only postpones the pain and worsens decisions. Open your heart with prayerful people, cry when necessary, and then rise up to obey. Governance is not denying tears; it is giving them a right destination before God and His will.
Practical ways to govern feelings
- Identify and name what you feel, without embellishment and without guilt.
- Look for prayer friends; not everyone is close, choose those proven over time.
- Bring everything to prayer: ask, cry, and submit to the Father's will.
- Cut the numbing that leads to a chain of bad decisions.
- If necessary, seek a therapist aligned with the Word.
I know how it hurts. I have swallowed humiliation, cried in secret, and prayed broken. God sustained me, and I rose up to live. Do the same today: surrender your anxiety, for He cares for you. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Feelings are dangerous when they govern, powerful when governed. Place them on the altar, receive direction, and follow. The area you do not govern, someone else will govern for you. In Jesus, you can take back governance.
