Stop Running

When I run from what God commanded, I go down; when I obey, God lifts me up and uses me.

Read

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me." But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord. But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

Today’s message

God said to Jonah: arise and go. He arose, but to flee. He paid the fare, went down to the hold, and slept while the ship was almost breaking apart. I look at this scene and recognize our stubbornness: we pay to disobey. We invest time, energy, and money in the wrong route, trying to escape from the presence that cannot be escaped. God blew a wind, and Jonah's life turned around. When I run, I go down. When I obey, God governs the route and gives me ground again.

Inside the fish, Jonah prayed. Anguish became an altar, and the bottom of the sea became a courtroom with God (Jonah 2:1). He confessed: I went down to the bottoms of the mountains (Jonah 2:6). It is like this: disobedience pushes us down, but repentance opens the second chance. The word of the Lord came to him a second time, with the same order and the same grace. God did not change His mission because of our stubbornness; He changes us to fulfill the mission He has already spoken.

Some lessons I want to share with you

  1. Anguish can lead us to God's presence — pray, even in the dark.
  2. The path of disobedience always leads down — stop going down.
  3. If you repent, there will be a second chance — God speaks again.
  4. Do not let emotional wounds govern your heart — release forgiveness.
  5. Stop rummaging through the life of those who have left your path — move on.
  6. Align yourself with God's purpose in holiness — obedience opens the way.
Stop running from what God has already given you as a mission, from what God has already told you is right, that you need to do.

Jonah preached, Nineveh broke down, and God forgave. Jonah got angry because his wound still ruled his heart. I cannot ask for mercy for myself and demand justice for others. The Word calls us: put away bitterness, wrath, and malice from your heart; forgive, as God forgave us in Christ (Ephesians 4:31-32). When I release the offense, the mission fits back in me. When I forgive, heaven finds space to do what it has already decided to do.

How to respond now

  1. Pray today, before the fish swallows you — bring your anguish to the altar.
  2. Repent and receive the second chance — rise up and obey.
  3. Forgive those who hurt you — do not let the wound dictate your path.
  4. Stop running and align yourself with the purpose — go where God has already commanded.

I believe: God has not lost control of your story. The wrong route did not cancel Jonah's calling; yours does not cancel what God has established. The wind that confronts you is not to sink you, it is to turn you to Nineveh. Rise up. Stop paying the price of running away. Pray, repent, forgive, and walk in holiness. When we align with God's purpose, extraordinary things happen — in us, and through us.

Did you know

  • Jonah has four chapters and 48 verses, a brief reading that encompasses the entire arc of mission and repentance.
  • The city of Nineveh was so large that it took three days to walk through it (Jonah 3:3).
  • Jonah remained three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish before being vomited onto dry land (Jonah 1:17).

Key phrases

  • Our anguish can lead us to God's presence.
  • If you repent, there will be a second chance.
  • Do not let emotional wounds govern your heart.
  • Rise up. The command from heaven for you is: rise up.
