Eyes Opened, Heart Burning: The Impact of the Resurrection

The resurrection of Jesus changes understanding, affection, and testimony: it opens eyes, warms the heart, and sets feet on mission.

And they said to one another, 'Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?

Today’s message

God loves to start where no one expects: an empty tomb generated the best news in history. I look at the road to Emmaus and see myself there: heavy conversation, wilted hope, steps going in the wrong direction. Jesus approaches, but their eyes are closed. It wasn't a lack of religiosity; it was a lack of faith in the Word. The resurrection is not an Easter ornament; it is the axis of our faith. If Christ did not conquer death, everything falls apart. But if He lives, everything rises again.

Look at the text. They knew the facts, but did not understand the meaning. Jesus calls them foolish and slow of heart, and begins with the Scriptures. He did not change the subject; He opened the Bible. From Genesis to the Prophets, He showed that the Messiah would suffer and enter into glory. Then, at the table, He broke the bread: eyes opened, heart on fire, feet returning. When the Word illuminates and fellowship warms, life changes direction. The resurrection goes from discourse to action.

Three truths I organized from the text

  1. The importance of Christ's resurrection: without it, there is no standing gospel.
  2. The evidence of Christ's resurrection: multiple appearances and an empty tomb.
  3. The impact of Christ's resurrection: renewed understanding, affection, and testimony.

Seven implications of the importance of the resurrection

  1. Because Jesus rose, our sins were forgiven.
  2. Because Jesus Christ rose, our faith has a solid foundation.
  3. Our preaching is powerful, fruitful, and effective because He rose.
  4. Our testimony is true because Jesus Christ rose.
  5. Those who have fallen asleep in Christ will rise in glory because He rose.
  6. He guarantees true joy now and in the life to come because He rose.
The best news the world has ever heard came from the empty tomb of Jesus Christ.

Now, let me bring this closer to you. Emmaus is the direction of the sunset when hope is lost. The risen Christ turns the track around: open Bible, set table, returning feet. It is not theory; it is a real path. It was the same with Mary, Peter, the eleven, and more than five hundred brothers. And at Pentecost, Peter raised his voice because there was no body to silence the preaching. If the tomb is empty, our agenda cannot be full of excuses.

Four concrete impacts of the resurrection

  1. Eyes opened by the explanation of the Scriptures: understanding that dispels pessimism.
  2. Heart burning by fellowship with Jesus: affection rekindled in the presence of the Lord.
  3. Swift feet to proclaim: priority that overcomes fatigue and distance.
  4. Open lips to announce: He lives, and this needs to be said to the city and the nation.

So, rise up from that internal Emmaus bench. Open the Bible with humility. Ask the Lord to warm your heart. Return to the place of commitment and speak. We do not worship a Christ trapped in the tomb; we worship the one who conquered death. The grave is not our final address. The empty tomb is the cradle of the church and the starting point of its steps today. Go back to Jerusalem. Say clearly: He lives.

Did you know

  • Emmaus was sixty stadia from Jerusalem, according to Luke 24, a fact preserved in the account.
  • The first witnesses of the empty tomb were women, a fact reiterated in the gospels.
  • At Pentecost, Peter publicly preached the resurrection, the center of the first apostolic announcement.

Key phrases

  • The best news the world has ever heard came from the empty tomb of Jesus Christ.
  • The tomb of Jesus was opened and opened from the inside out.
  • Eyes opened, heart warmed, swift feet, and open lips to proclaim.
  • The grave is not our final address.
